News from the Field Red Panda Sighting
Two wild pandas trapped by local villagers In the spring, Sonam Lama, our amazing community ranger, who trains and monitors our forest guardians, was alterted that two red panda had been caught and were caged by local merchants. Once local villagers learned of the captures, they alerted Sonam and they released red panda back into the wild.
First Camera Trapped Wild Red Panda! Red Panda Network and Red Panda Network – Nepal are excited to share with you the first images of a wild red panda captured in a camera trap. During our 2007 Eco-trip, our team with It’s Your World staff and freelance writer, Wendee Holtcamp, captured these images in Kanyadevi Community Forest, near the summit of Santukpur. We hope to use this technique in a year-long study of the distribution of red panda in two thirds of Nepal. News from the Field Red Panda Network - U.S. The New Year brings new faces to Red Panda Network - U.S. We have added two new members to our Board of Directors and a new office administrator. Please join us in welcoming them to our team.Jerry Roe Board Member Jerry is the Principal of Nomad Ecology, an ecological consulting firm based out of Martinez, Ca. Nomad Ecology specializes in developing and implementing endangered species conservation programs in California and internationally. He is an expert in camera trap methodology and conducted a study of snow leopard wih Dr. Rodney Jackson and the Snow Leopard Conservancy. His strong knowledge wildlife biology and international wildlife conservation make him a welcome addition to our board. Madhavan Thirimulai Board Member Madhavan brings his entrepreneurial experience with start-ups and many years as a Computer Software Executive to the Red Panda Network Board. His past affiliations include Vice President of Engineering at Mathon Systems and Podbridge. His expertise in business organization and finding efficient strategies will be invaluable to the network. Vicky Bhundhumani Administrative Coordinator Vicky@redpandanetwork.org Vicky is excited to join the Red Panda Network this year as the new Administrative Coordinator. Vicky began as an event volunteer and she hopes to use her five years of office experience to further the vision of the Red Panda Network while working alongside its talented and experienced team. She is in her last year at San Jose State University where she is working toward her B.A. in Psychology however, school helped to spark her passion in Environmental Studies. She worked as a research assistant for the Santa Clara County Recycling Hotline through SJSU for two years, which gave her the confidence to work with the public and state and federal agencies. She also works for Great Books Summer Program at Stanford with middle to high school students allowing her to share her enthusiasm for education and reading. |
