My first walk into the steep, terraced mid-hills of Nepal inspired me to want to take action in preserving the remaining forests in eastern Nepal. As a community education resource volunteer (CERV) in Peace Corps Nepal, I was a catalyst for the founding of four environmental youth groups which spawned several community leaders. In order to learn more about international conservation, I extended my Peace Corps service and transferred to Peace Corps Guatemala and worked at a wildlife refuge operated by The Nature Conservancy. While working in Guatemala, I recognized the pivotal role of science in long-term conservation, so in 2000, I enrolled in San Jose State University’s Environmental Studies graduate program. To complete my master’s degree, as a Fulbright Scholar, I conducted research on the status of the red panda in the Ilam region of the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung corridor. These experiences provided me with a strong foundation for successfully creating The Red Panda Project and reinforced my conviction that conservation can be achieved only with long-term commitment. Now is the time to capitalize on promises I have made to myself and to a community and region that has captivated my spirit.

I am excited to join the Red Panda Network team during this time of organizational growth and development. A desire to combine my passion for academics and helping communities in need led me to pursue and complete my Master of Business Administration in Managing International and Community Development. I hope that my work here will generate more awareness around the world on the importance that the conservation red panda and their habitat have in creating a sustainable future for the communities that depend on red panda forest for survival and the preservation of one of the most diverse eco-regions in the world.

I joined the Red Panda Network in November of 2009 and I'm excited to be part of this growing organization. I come to RPN from the realm of local politics in the South Bay where I spent time with a local mayor's campaign, served on staff as an intern with the San José City Council for over a year and as the Latino Outreach Coordinator with Obama for America during the 2008 California Democratic Primary. I'm currently a student at San José City College and also work for local non-profit based in San José focusing on after-school sports programs for at-risk youth.
